7. Altes and Neues Museum

Over the past two decades, extensive work has been completed to renovate and reconstruct the museum buildings on the Museumsinsel. Following the master plan from 1999 the entire complex will be brought to modern museum standards by 2026.

Select either the Old or the New Museum to start your exploration.

This website shows the plan for renovation of each museum on the island. There is an overview and history of each building:

8. Other Museums

Using the link for the Master Plan Museumsinsel above, continue your exploration of the area with one of the other museums on the island.

  • Research the history of one museum’s construction and renovation as part of the master plan.
  • How does this building correspond or complement the design of the Altes and/or Neues Museums?

In 2019, the James Simon Galerie opened. As a newly-constructed visitor center and entrance for the island, this building, according to the language of the master plan, strives to “harmoniously blend in with the historical ensemble and at the same time set a modern accent on the Museum Island.”

  • What elements of its design draw on the style of the Altes or the Neues Museum?
  • Does the building achieve the goal of blending with the existing structures?
