After the Wall Fell

6. Then and Now

Examine the pairs of photos on the website Chronik der Mauer. On the outline map of the Berlin Wall, click on one of the numbered boxes to see images from then and now. As you slide the bar left and right, two images are superimposed from before and after the Wall fell. Select one or two locations and compare what is shown. The website is in German, but don’t let that stop you from exploring the images.

7. Wall in the World

As it was dismantled, many sections of the Wall were presented as gifts or sold at auction. These sections are now displayed in locations around the world. On the interactive map created by The Wall Net, select a few locations that interest you and answer the following questions:

  • Where are the Wall segments located?
  • What is the connection, if any, between that place and Berlin?
  • Looking more broadly at the locations of Wall segments around the world, what parts of the globe are without many sections of the Wall? Speculate about the reasons this may be.
